This superb abstract “Crab
Plaque” was made by master potter Guy Sydenham at his Mermaid Studio, Portland,
Dorset in 2000
As you can see by the
inscription on the back and the accompanying photograph, it was made to
celebrate the registration of Poole Pottery Collector’s Club youngest member -
although it is called a plaque in Guy’s own description, it is more of a
shallow dish or bowl, a little over 1" (actually 3cm) high and 6.25"
(15.5cm) diameter and has the usual Guy Sydenham monogram on the base
Although every piece is
unique, Guy did make lots of pieces with a sealife theme, you can see pictures
of some of them in his wonderful book, "A Potter's Life II" which is
focussed on Portland Rokko Art and was published with the help of John
Benfield - if you don't have a copy of the book....get one!
A very fine example, this
lovely piece is in great condition with no chips, cracks or restoration
and will make a fine addition to your collection or a super gift
